No one likes being alone on Christmas… at least I don’t think… but there are plenty of ways to keep up with the holiday spirit without getting down in the dumps that no one is around you to be spending Christmas with.
I am lucky enough to be spending my Christmas in Germany and although it’s not with my family and friends back home, I have a new family here who I am so excited to spend the holidays with. However, not every traveler and travel blogger have the time or resources to get home for Christmas. I’m hoping these 17 tips will help you get a little more of a kick out of your solo-Christmas!
-
Take a Bubble Bath
Light some candles, turn out the lights, maybe some candy cane bubble bath?
-
Watch Christmas Movies
Start a Christmas movie marathon, stay in your pajamas all day and fudge out on the couch until your legs go numb.
-
Bake Cookies
Christmas is the best time for baking cookies – go out to the store, buy all the ingredients you need to make every single Christmas cookie and make small batches of everyone… or huge batches and deliver them to your neighbors door steps.
-
Build a Ginger Bread House
I’m not just talking about any gingerbread house… I’m talking about buying all the ingredients and building it up from scratch! Go all out and create a Christmas fortress – perhaps making a world record?
-
Sing Christmas Carols in Your Underwear
There is nothing better than stripping down to your undies, dancing around the house and singing at the top of your lungs. Get in the Christmas spirit, throw on a few Christmas tunes and jam out!
-
Put up a Christmas Tree
If you haven’t done so already, get a little more festive, put up a tree – celebrate it through the new year since your tree will be the freshest on the block.
-
Decorate the House
Go dig up those old dusty decorations from the past and make the best decoration set-up you’ve ever seen!
-
Make DIY Christmas Ornaments
If you’re a Pinterest addict like myself, you’ve probably already made a few DIY projects for the holidays. Go online and start making all the Christmas ornaments you can for your fresh to death tree!
-
Take a road trip to a holiday destination
Doesn’t have to be a long one, just look up what is going on around you during the day and go there. Find a Christmas Crochet class? Haha, who knows, you may learn a thing or two!
-
Visit the homeless and make their Christmas a little brighter
Be kind this holiday and donate those delicious Christmas cookies you made to the homeless! Perhaps go through the house and find your old mittens and hats that you’re no longer using and donate them!
-
Have a ‘mental health day’
I have my mom to thank for this made up ‘holiday’ of hers that has actually cured many of my ‘illnesses’ within a day. A mental health day is a day all for YOU regardless of whether or not you are really sick. Sleep in, have a hearty breakfast, a long steamy hot shower, shave your legs, wash your hair, pluck your eyebrows, paint your nails, I’m talking about the whole sheebanng here! Do everything for YOU and make yourself happy.
-
Find a new hobby – like knitting or being a nudist
I think I would like to learn how to crochet this holiday season, but I’m too focused on my Pinterest addiction. However, finding a new hobby over the holidays is a great thing to do!
-
Make a Christmas fortress out of things around the house
Who said forts were for children?! I think it would be so awesome to take everything in your house and build the best Christmas fortress anyone has ever seen (or just you).
-
Eat an entire tub of Candy Cane ice-cream
I feel sorry for you if you’re in a place, riding solo and don’t have access to candy cane ice cream! I am actually missing my Canadian traditions while I am here in Germany and I don’t get to devour ice cream either.
-
Have a party-for-one cocktail party and drink up!
Go out to the store and buy all the ingredients you will need to make loads of new and exciting Christmas cocktails. Make one inspired online, make your own and create new wonderful cocktails to make more of.
-
Make a Christmas feast for one!
I’m talking turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cake, fruit salad, EVERYTHING! Just make a portion for one .. a BIG portion for one!
-
Build a snowman
Okay, maybe you don’t wanna show the world you’re riding solo on Christmas, so just scoot on over to the backyard and make your snowman there. Make a real good snowman, tweet it to all your friends and make them jealous.
Enjoying my #holidaycountdown posts this month?! I think I had more fun writing them! But what’s even better?! The fact that I’ve been filming my #holidaycountdown whenever I do something festive! Check it out at: www.youtube.com/user/giveforgranted
