Solo travelling has become more and more of a popular choice for travellers across the globe. However, one of the biggest negatives to traveling solo is that you’re never going to get group rates or discounted fares when alone. With a little courage and effort there are useful ways you can try and save money while travelling solo.

Save Money while Traveling

  1. Book tours with groups so you can split the money
If you’re staying in a hotel with a tour desk, talk to the tour operator and ask if you can join a tour that has already been pre-planned. If you’re booking outside of your hotel, give the tour companies a few calls and ask the same thing, are there any available tours that need a few extra people. This is a great way to jump on board a tour and split the cost with others, not to mention you may make a couple of great friends.
  2. Book accommodations with single beds not double/queen
Some hotels do actually sell smaller rooms for singles and doubles. In most cases people will book one room with two double or queen sized beds. Travellers from across the globe traveling solo but looking for privacy will book a standard double room which can accommodate up to 4 people. Why pay for the price of 4 people when you can check in advance to see if the hotels have rooms with single or double beds.
  3. Consider hostels, even single rooms are often available in hostels
Even if you’re not the typical ‘backpacking’ type, some hostels actually have some wonderful money saving but private accommodations. Hostels are a popular choice for many travellers and they how now started to cater to the single and partner travellers looking for a little more privacy by offering private accommodations.
  4. Try and arrange to take taxi rides with others from the same location
Leaving the same place with a few other travellers? Book a taxi ride together to save some money. This tip may take a bit of bravery, but I know you can do it. Just stay alert and be social. Many tourist end up doing similar things while on vacation, perhaps you can plan your schedule along side with another traveller in the building and save money on not just cab rides but excursions as well.
  5. Consider carpooling in safe countries
There are websites all over the globe that offer carpooling options. Of course there are some countries and some cities that we wouldn’t advice carpooling in but dependent on how comfortable you are where you’re traveling, check up on a few carpooling sites to see if you can save some money.
  6. Buy package meals for 2 – 4 people and pack it for later
This sounds funny, but I’ve done it. Many restaurants now a days cater to later groups of people. There are quite often ‘family meals’ where you can buy a mass amount of food for a much better deal than just buying one meal alone. If you’ve got the amenities in your accommodations to refrigeration and/or warm up food, why not?
  7. Cook with Other Travellers and split the cost
You don’t always need to go out for food. Breakfast is the best time to be cooking for yourself, it’s also the easiest meal to have without the proper amenities. Most hotels will have a tea kettle for your morning coffee or tea, pack a few croissants or bagels with some jam and peanut butter and you’re already saving money! If you’re looking to still experience local cuisine, go out to a grocery store and learn how to cook your own local cuisine. Grab a few other travellers to cook with a split the cost if you can!
  8. Be open minded to new money saving ways while traveling solo
The more important tip to take away from the blog post is to always have an open mind. Without an open mind it will be harder to make friends, harder to travel and definitely harder to save money.
