Well, it certainly isn’t easy and I would love to put all those people in one room who have told me time and time again that what I do sounds like a dream. ‘Writing your thoughts and opinions, what could be easier?!’ Just because you have this idea of what it’s like to be a blogger on the road, doesn’t mean you really understand.
For starters, blogging about our experiences and opinions isn’t the only thing that matters. Quite frankly, it actually matters the least in the grand scheme of things. This is what I want to tell you about today – the secret to blogging on the road and why some become successful and some bury themselves into a deep hole of debt.
1. Organization
I really consider myself to be one of the most organized people I know, perhaps even too organized sometimes (or at least my mother thinks so). Organization is so key to running a travel blog. Though the thought of blogging may come easy, the work certainly doesn’t always. You have to organize your time to put aside a few hours to blog, a few hours to promote, and of course a few hours to actually experience what you are writing. Though this is just the first step of many that will lead you on your way to a successful travel blog.
2. Scheduling
There are days that you will have no internet, times when your bus breaks down and you miss meetings and check ins. There are times where you are ill and have no energy left in your body to experience things, let alone write them down. This is where scheduling comes in very handy and honestly, this is something I lack on at the moment. Writing posts on a down week and scheduling them ahead of time, buffering tweets and Facebook posts to be set for days and times when you know you won’t be able to get online, etc.
3. Partnerships
This is a huge part to making a successful blog. Without any partnerships it is hard to go viral. This is a stage that I am still in, though I have already make some incredible connections and partnerships, I’m still waiting for that one which just blows my mind and helps drastically increase my readership. NOTE: Please choose the right partners, there’s nothing worse than finding a budget backpacker blogger staying in luxury hotels.
4. Friends
More often than not I actually find travel conferences to be more useful for finding other industry friends than I do making business connections. We are all there to do the same thing thus increasing the competition and making the newer bloggers fade away into a large pool of incredible talent. I’ve found that sometimes the best thing to do is make friends in the industry – they have similar interests, similar values and are more often than not fairly outgoing. Blogging friends are also great to team up with and promote each others work.
5. Social Media
And though the actual content of the blog amounts to a big portion of your success, if you aren’t using social media properly, then your amazing content will be going no where. You can’t expect people to find it on their own, you have to push and market the heck out of your blog. I understand that people may find you annoying, perhaps they will unfriend you at first, but those who are interested will really stay interested if you keep sharing the awesome content you’re producing.
These are definitely the 5 secrets I have when it comes to running a successful blog while on the road. Care to join in on the conversation? Tweet me @giveforgranted with the hashtag #blogsecrets OR simply comment in the section below!
