The first place travelers tend to think of when I say Serbia is Belgrade. Well that’s an obvious, but what about other cities in Serbia. What about Uzice? The beautiful, historical and lush green landscape.Due to some travel complications (who doesn’t have travel complications?) we had to cancel our trip to Belgrade, though I so thankful that we were still able to carry out our 4 day trip to the beautiful Uzice, Serbia.

Uzice

We were invited by Eco Hostel Republik  to come and explore all that Uzice has to offer. From the people, the place, the accommodations and the food… there are so many reasons why I will be back again soon.

I know travelling sustainably can be hard, and I’m aware that with some of our work schedules and only having 10 days off a year… it’s also a pain in the butt having to think of ‘how to travel’ rather than just getting up and jet setting away from all the work left back at home.

Uzice

Vacation is not about work, it is about relaxation.

Luckily, Uzice is actually one of those places that require very little effort to make your trip sustainable. Some of the best things to do in Uzice are very easily found to be sustainable. Here they are:

Bike Along the Djetinja River

Though you can actually make this an entire day trip, we only biked the first small leg of the journey to know that it was worth coming back to. The views are stunning, the nature is calming and it takes about 30 kilometers round trip never seeing the same scenery twice.

Visit the Local Market & Make a Feast

The city is small enough that you won’t need to look very hard to find this neat market. It’s called the ‘Open Market’ and anyone around town should know how to get there. The market isn’t promoted as an ‘eco-friendly market,’ nor do they call themselves ‘organic’ or ‘bio,’ but does it really matter? This place is the real deal. You’re getting only locally picked and produced foods to bring straight to the cooking table.

Try Out Rock-climbing

I was offered a shot at rock climbing… though politely declined, as my upper body strength is pretty well non-existent. If you’re brave enough to do it, the rock climbing organization in Uzice is constantly building new routes to test out throughout the parks and the Djetinja Canyon.

Explore the History

During our stay in we were lucky enough to experience the Uzice City Tour guided by Marko of Eco Hostel Republik . We made a visit to the national museum, the national treasury vaults and the ammunition factory from World War II. Our next stop lead us to the Hydroelectronic Power plant built on Tesla principals.

Stay at Eco Hostel Republik

The Eco Hostel Republik has got to be one of my favorite stops on this two-month backpacking journey. It is not only an Eco hostels, but it’s also a home. It’s been a while since I was back in my cozy bed at home and it’s what I needed most nearing the end of a long journey. This place was my safe haven for a few nights while I re-gathered my thoughts and carried onward.

It’s cheap, it’s cozy and it’s the best spot in the city.
