You’ve explored all there is to see of the Berlin Wall and you think you’ve seen it all, but have you really?
I was so amazed by the history behind the Berlin Wall being both built and torn down. I took photos of different parts of the wall across the East Side Gallery, read up on my history and even took part in a couple of tours and museum viewings during my last visit. I had imagined that there was not much more to see of the wall and was very, very wrong!
There is so much history behind the Berlin Wall, but what I didn’t know is that a lot of this history actually came from underneath the Berlin Wall.
Berliner Unterwelten, better known in English as the “Underground World” offers numerous tours. No matter what age, you will find a tour that sparks your curiosity and excitement to dive into the history of the under world.
Which Tour Did I Do?
Tour M – Under the Berlin Wall: While exploring underground tunnels, subway stations and sewage pipes, we learned all about the people who died or survived their way to freedom under the wall.
What Other Tours Are There?
- Tour 1: Dark Worlds: Experience WWII Bombing Raids
- Tour 2: Explore the ruins of WWII
- Tour 3: Subways and Bunkers in the Cold War
- Tour F: The Fichtebunker Time Capsule
The Overall Experience:
The one thing I find is that I either love museums and tours, or hate them. I think this may be similar for many of you. It takes a special person to be able to bring history to life and really en grain the images in your mind. Our tour guide did a wonderful job at engaging the entire group and teaching us the history of the under world. Usually if I’ve done something once, I wouldn’t do it again. Given that the Berliner Unterwelten offers such diverse tours, I am excited to come back and take part in another tour! 🙂
Tips While Visiting Berliner Unterwelten
- BOOK IN ADVANCE! Though there is no option to book online or before the day of the tour, it is well advised that you make your first stop of the day to book your Berliner Unterwelten tour for later on in the day. **Tour F tickets are only sold 15 minutes before the tour departs.
- If you are claustrophobic don’t worry, the tunnels aren’t ‘tunnels’ at all. Yes, it is underground and yes, it is dark. You have the option to exit at any point in time and it really is a wide enough space that you shouldn’t have any problems at all.
- NO PHOTOGRAPHY. Though it is a wonderful tour, there is no photography allowed. If you’re planning on dragging along a big honken camera, perhaps think twice.
- ENJOY! There are wonderful tours across Berlin, but I must say… this is most definitely one of the better tours I’ve been to!
