Corfu is one of those places I’ve just never heard a bad thing about. It’s one of those places while you’re backpacking through other countries, you hear other travelers talk about ‘that one time in Corfu,’ perhaps it’s because it’s a beautiful Greek island… of course, it’s because it’s a beautiful Greek island, but there are so many reasons why people are constantly thinking back to the fond memories they’ve had in Corfu.
What is Corfu like?
Some may tell you it’s filled with beautiful beaches and tanning spots but I beg to differ. Corfu is the island of Phaekia and one of the most historical islands in Greece. Despite the tropical landscape and sea view beauty, Corfu has some of the world’s most beautiful architecture from coast to coast. Though most of us are just excited to jump on a bus and head to the beach, I encourage you to take some time to breathe here. Explore the nature, the green space (and the blue spaces) while appreciating all the historical places in Corfu.
Explore Corfu’s beautiful green spaces
There is more to Corfu than white sandy beaches and blue waters, there are tons of green areas to explore along the coast and deep in the center. Though this time around, with less than one week to explore, I took a scooter around these green spaces. There is actually a hiking trail that is 220 kilometers and stretches from the far south of the island to the north. Though only little bits can be completed in a short trip, it may be worth it to look into a two-month journey through this beautiful hiking trail of Corfu, Greece. The trail is named “Corfu Trail”… I wonder why… but is a fantastic way to find the cute and quaint little villages throughout Corfu hidden deep within the valleys and high above the hills.
And then explore Corfu’s beautiful blue waters
I’m talking about the beaches… the one thing everyone has on their mind when arriving in Corfu. Don’t just stay at one beach for your entire trip; it’s worth it to venture across the island if you have the time.
I stayed on the northern coast of Corfu and spent quite a bit of time in Agios Stefanos, Acharavi, Sidari, Kassiopi, and Peroulades. Take a look at just a few of the wonderful places below. Tempted yet?
And then dive into the amazing history of Corfu
There are also some classic historical sights in the center of the old town that you’ll have to visit before heading home. Add these to your exploration list:
- The New Fortress
- The Old Fortress
- Spianada Square
- Michael’s Church
- George’s Palace
But what about those sights left undiscovered? I do blog about sustainable travel, but this is going to be one of those times I sneak a little bit of naughty into this blog and suggest you rent a motor scooter or an e-bike to explore the unseen bits of Corfu’s historical places.
There are many beautiful small churches and squares not just along the coast but in the hills and mountains. I could spend days writing about the cute little historical sites I found, but instead, I’ll give you a few photos so you can become inspired to find your old hidden gems. That’s what being in Corfu is all about!
Where to Stay
Corfu, Greece is a place to indulge! Don’t spend your time grunting around looking for one-star accommodations far off from the waters’ edge just to save a few bucks. Feel free to spoil yourself here, it’s more affordable than you may think! Actually, though I have a strong infatuation with the country, it’s not easy to find places that have a large amount of environmental awareness. With this being said, sometimes staying in those low budget accommodations are actually preventing the solution of sustainable and green travel on the island.
Instead, try checking out Corfu Century Resorts. A beautiful resort on the northern coast in Acharavi nestled in the peacefulness of nature while only a 10-minute walk to the white sandy beaches. After personally meeting the owner of this place, it’s easy to see how hard they’re working at creating a sustainable and successful business. From the larger plans that tourists usually forget about (like inputting water-saving functions, reducing landfill waste and purchasing local food for the meal preparation) to the easy to see features like the numerous lemon and orange trees scattered along the premises, it’s a no-brainer as to why Corfu Century Resorts is already a favorite among travelers visiting Corfu.
